With great sadness, the Glendale Association of REALTORS® mourns the loss of one of our cherished affiliate members. Aline Habeshian, Vice President and Senior Account Executive at ClearMark Title, lived a life of selfless giving. Aline lost her battle with cancer on the evening of June 8, 2021. Despite many months of treatments, Aline nonetheless remained busy and active and continued to show up for events and meetings at GAOR. She did not let illness slow her down or keep her away from her commitment to people and the activities she enjoyed. Aline has been an affiliate member of GAOR since 2011 and was our GAOR 2018 Affiliate Of The Year. She served as the Chair of GAOR’s Affiliates Committee in 2019 and over the years participated in planning several of our memorable member and community events. Aline surrounded herself with family and friends, love, and laughter. We hope that...Continue reading

May 26, 2021 Hundreds of bills failed to advance last week during a rapid-fire appropriations process known as the suspense file. The suspense file process was introduced in the Legislature in the 1980s to promote fiscal responsibility by evaluating the costs and comparing bills before they reach the Assembly or Senate floor. Unexpectedly, the day before the committee hearings last Thursday, President pro-Tempore Toni Atkins and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon announced a new limit of 12 bills per legislator, ensuring the death of hundreds of bills. Atkins reasoned that rules requiring “increased access for people to phone in public comment” made the cap necessary. Of the 16 priority bills highlighted during the League of California Cities Legislative Action Days, 12 were placed on the appropriations committee suspense files and during those hearings, five bills had favorable outcomes for California cities. Yesterday we joined the California Association of REALTORS® and our colleagues all over the state for Legislative Day. It started in the morning with a large presentation from CAR on the issues affecting us every day. We also heard from our state leaders including Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins, Senate Republican Leader Scott Wilk and Governor Gavin Newsom. Because we are a non-partisan organization, we know how to work with everyone, across party lines, so that we can focus on improving housing in our state and get important work done. About 2,300 people listened to the Governor’s speech online today. Next year, since we expect the pandemic to be in the rear-view mirror by then, we will be in Sacramento in person to meet with our state leaders and remind them about the need to make housing a priority for everyone. “What needs to happen is less driving and more easy and safe options for getting around.” Assembly Transportation Chair Laura Friedman (D-Glendale) is tackling all of this with A.B. 1401, which would prohibit cities from imposing minimum parking requirements on certain developments, specifically those located near existing public transit. The bill has strong support from housing advocates, affordable housing developers, and a few mayors who showed up to the press conference to tout its benefits. Her goal is to help California set policies that “prioritize and center human beings over cars; that prioritize people, housing, health, and the environment,” she said.
